Our Vision: Transforming Computer Science Education Through Human-Centered, AI-Augmented Learning. CSERG is reimagining how students learn to code by developing intelligent tools that provide immediate, rich, and personalized feedback. Our flagship project, WebTA, critiques student code in real-time by identifying common coding mistakes, known as antipatterns, and delivering actionable feedback to guide learning. Grounded in cognitive and learning sciences, our approach improves student understanding, self-efficacy, and engagement, especially in large-scale first-year computing courses. These efforts are powered by AI, machine learning, and symbolic reasoning, designed with deep attention to human factors and educational equity.
CSERG brings together a multidisciplinary team of faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates working across various domains such as automated code critique, interactive textbooks, game-based learning, sociotechnical systems, and digital literacy. Our projects cater to audiences ranging from novice coders to older adults learning digital skills, all rooted in a shared commitment to student-centered learning. By constructing visual tools to specify programming antipatterns, designing AI chatbots to assist digital newcomers, and examining how generative AI reshapes tutoring, our work reflects a mindset of innovation and collaboration.
Our vision is to produce scholarly research in computer science education that integrates pedagogy, AI, and human-centered design. We aspire to serve as a central hub for transformative research, open-source tools, and collaborative partnerships with K-12 schools, libraries, and higher education institutions. We strive to shape the future of computing education, empowering learners of all ages to think critically, solve problems, and thrive in an AI-augmented world.
